About Us

Everything you need to know about us.

Gavin Careri, Creator and Owner of Hire A Hand was raised on a vineyard in the small village of Hanwood on the outskirts of Griffith, NSW in the Riverina. Growing up Gavin was always keen on building or fixing things up the back shed with his father Mick. He has always had a creative mind and over the years has come up with some very interesting ideas, one day he's going to be a Veterinary Surgeon, the next day he wants to run the farm with his father.
It wasn't until in year 10 in high school when Gavin had to pick where he wanted to go for work experience, he had no idea of what he wanted to do or be. It came to the last day and he still wasn't sure what to do even for work experience, but he was running out of time and had to make a quick decision. Still to this day he doesn't know why the word cabinetmaking left his lips.
So off he went on work experience as a cabinetmaker with no idea of what he was in for.

During the 2 weeks of work experience Gavin realised that this is something that he was passionate about, he loved every minute of it. After the 2 weeks was up he was offered a job as an apprentice cabinetmaker. From there Gavin was keen to work in other trades. He already knew all this stuff, it was, he thought common knowledge. He wanted to work in as many different trades as he could to get as much experience on the job. He knew that you couldn't just got out into the world and say "Yeah, I know how to do that".

Over the last 18 years Gavin has had experience in a wide variety of trades including:

Cabinetmaking, Stonemasonry, Paving, Glazing, Landscaping & Gardening, Plastering / Gyprocking and Painting along with being a natural jack of all trades thanks to his father.

As time went on Gavin knew that he didn't want to do the same type of work everyday, even though he loved what he was doing he couldn't bare to be stuck in the same place day in day out doing the same thing and was getting over working for someone and not being appreciated for the hard work and dedication he was giving his employers.

After Gavin bought his first house it all started to become a lot clearer, he wasn't even in there a day before he started ripping things down and pulling up the old carpet. He already knew what the house would look like on completion before he even started. It was while renovating his house that it all clicked, he finally knew what he wanted to do and be. His ideal job would be to renovate houses, but this is where he came to a dead end. How do you get employed to be a home renovator? There is no such thing, unless you build up your own portfolio and work for yourself. So how would he get a job doing it in the meantime?

Over the years Gavin's creative mind has taken him through different ventures, but he was never really happy with just doing something for the sake of it.

Gavin decided that if there isn't a job out there to renovate houses, then he will create one.

And so Hire A Hand was born.

"I have never been so passionate about anything like this, this is my baby.
I love doing what I do, not only do I get to fix and create things or spend the day doing someone's garden. I am constantly meeting and interacting with new people and building fantastic relationships with my repeat loyal customers.
The satisfaction I get from seeing a happy smiling face once I have finished a job is the best reward anyone can get. I walk away feeling like the proudest man in the world." Gavin.

"I will never forget that feeling when I became the Handyman for my first Real Estate Agent. To think that this idea of mine, to be doing what I love doing and being such a perfectionist in everything that I do that by word of mouth Real Estate Agents were calling me to work for them. Wow!" Gavin.

Mick Careri, Gavin's Father has always been a jack of all trades. If anything was needed to be done around the house you could be sure that he knew how to go about fixing it or making it for that matter.
Over the years he has completely transformed the family home which was once a fibro house.
He has kept all of the original ceilings to keep the old world charm and to keep a part of the original house. Mick and Marj are major green thumbs as well. Gavin and his brothers Michael, Danny and David and Sisters Jodie and Keirsten have all watched the garden around the house grow from a tiny garden into a 3 acre wonderland of manicured gardens with different rooms leading to different sections, you can spend the whole day in there doing nothing but enjoying your surroundings. There is a big dam towards the back end of the gardens that was once their water supply for the farm which is now a big pond full of koi fish with a jetty that goes out to the center that Mick built. They are constantly getting bookings to have family photos and weddings in the gardens are very popular too. Mick and Marj definitely have a creative eye.

Over the last 44 years Mick has had a lifetime of experience in everything. Farming, Welding, Building, Tiling, Paving, Gardening, Painting, Gyprocking / Plastering, Roofing, All types of Flooring, Custom Built Furniture and Garden Ornaments. You name it he has done it, and more then several times. And you can bet that if he's seen it or thought of it that he has made it. You can ask him anything and he'll know how to get it done without even thinking about it.

Mick truly is "Your Ultimate Handyman" and it definitely rubbed off on Gavin and his Brothers.
